http://www.democracynow.org – Hideous. Sadistic. Vicious. Murderous. That is how Noam Chomsky describes Israel’s 29-day offensive in Gaza that killed nearly 1,900 people and left almost 10,000 people injured. Chomsky has written extensively about the Israel/Palestine conflict for decades. After Israel’s Operation Cast Lead in 2008-2009, Chomsky co-authored the book, “Gaza in Crisis: Reflections on Israel’s War Against the Palestinians” with Israeli scholar Ilan Pappé. His other books on the Israel/Palestine conflict include “Peace in the Middle East? Reflections on Justice and Nationhood” and “The Fateful Triangle: The United States, Israel, and the Palestinians.” Chomsky is world-renowned political dissident, linguist and author, Institute Professor Emeritus at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has taught for more than 50 years.

  1. Chomsky’s right about the moral degradation of Israel as a result of all
this – look at how brainwashed Israeli youth are today, where they openly
declare their racism since they stand to benefit from that racism. Israel
is ensuring that its best and brightest minds will be corrupted with moral
bankruptcy, which will lead to further disaster as these youth grow of
military age or go on to serve in positions of power as adults. It’s sad
watching an entire nation’s youth drink the proverbial kool-aid.

  2. Like the Spartans treated the Helots, they declared war on them on a yearly
basis to justify the military society of the Spartans and he subjugation of
the Helots. And if any Helot cooperated with the Spartans, they would be
    punished like traitors.

it is a hideous atrocity that Hamas uses hospitals, schools, and civilian
homes as launching pads for rockets that bombard Israel. that is the truth.

Chomsky is a voice of reason and a brilliant analyst, but not a
“prospectivist”.On some topics (this one included), he doesn’t hesitate to
cross boundaries when describing the situation and drawing analogies, but
when it comes to thinking out of the box as to the alternatives, it seems
to me he remains quite confined within the perimeter of classical
speculation. If equating Israel with the South African apartheid state is
in many respects hazardous, as he says, establishing an untold parallel
between the Jewish pro-Israel, Afrikaner and East-Timorese lobbies in
Washington seems even more, doesn’t it ? Hoping Washington will budge and
disavow a bipartisan policy that has been lasting since the birth of the
state of Israel is like believing in Santa, to me. Unlike Sand or Pappe,
Chomsky fails to draw the logical conclusion from the slow vanishing of
Palestinian land before our very eyes : the need for a one-state solution.
    It somehow seems so taboo…

I find it incredibly amazing the foolish, idiotic, empty heads and hearts
towards the Almighty. People are going headlong into hell opposing the Word
of the Lord. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are
corrupt, they have done abominable works… He clearly says that Israel is
the apple of His eye. Do you all care so little for your lives that you
simply think being unbelieving and judging God’s people will usher you into
the arms of a loving God? This generation is completely Godless.
UNBELIEVABLE. Just because you say a thing is not so doesn’t make it ‘not
so’. HELLO??? Seek the face of our heavenly Father and turn from your ways
to His ways. To curse God and walk away from Him is to curse your own life
and walk away from your life. It’s that simple.

  7. Joseph Herman on

How does Chomsky want to negotiate with an organization that is opposed to
the very existence of Israel as explained in their charter? Somehow this
    gets lost on him.

  8. This “Chomskyesque” spin is so distorted and dishonest on so many levels.
It is so opportunistic to tie in other events (such as the unity government
between Hamas and Fatah) and unequivocally declare that was the reason for
Israel’s RESPONSE to constant provocation and aggression. No other country
would tolerate what Israel puts up with and would act much quicker and with
    much less restraint.
What’s so bad about “mowing the lawn?” When the grass and weeds get too
high it is nearly impossible to cut them. And when rockets are allowed to
build up in the tens of thousands and are ever more sophisticated it’s a
damn good thing to see this arsenal get at least somewhat depleted. And
when tunnels encroach under your sovereign territory and are used to carry
out attacks on your civilians then you proactively strive to destroy them.
(We all know of the huge coordinated terrorist attack involving these
tunnels, that was planned for the Jewish holidays and countless lives were
saved as a result of Israel’s actions.
Where is the condemnation of Hamas’ shameful strategy of imperiling the
lives of its citizens for propaganda purposes?
Perhaps you should stick to linguistics Noam as you know diddly squat about
the antecedents of this conflict and how it unfolded and your distorted
spins on it only embarrass yourself and show how fallacious, illogical, and
opportunistic you truly are. I am ashamed that you are supposedly a member
of the same religion as I am.

  9. derwen talia on

I wonder if Noam ever gets tired of stating the obvious over and over and
over again? I wonder how he tolerates the seemingly perennial stupidity of
the average person whose behaviors and beliefs reveal them to be nothing
more than a feces factory consuming crap and producing crap? I imagine the
powers that be have a great laugh every day at the gullibility of the
people they manipulate so easily into being their puppets under the
hypocritical guises of “nation” “god” “land” etc.

  10. Joseph Chiappetta on

This is a joke. Its like everyone has extremely short term memory, either
that, terrorist sympathizer, uninformed, or just plain stupid

  11. Isidor Farash on

Most Jews are raised with either an over-active sense of self-worth or, an
over-active sense of communal guilt. Chomsky belongs (strongly) to the
latter group. In fact, he may be their incarnate champion. This is why he
twists and contorts to find some rational answer to the various questions,
as false as those answers may be.
Religious Jews feel a spiritual attachment to the Jerusalem area, yet, it
was mainly secular Jews who constituted the core of the Zionist
movement. They did this to escape persecution in a variety of countries
where they lived. This sense of persecution was not irrational and was very
well founded. Thus, Israel is a REFUGE for the wellbeing and protection
of the world’s most prolifically persecuted religious minority, JEWS. Just
because we are no longer (today) being crammed into ovens does not mean we
are free from discrimination. Even though our earnings remain higher then
the non-Jewish average, does NOT mean we are free from discrimination. Who
can say what we might be earning without the discrimination?
Chomsky is one mixed-up puppydog. The Israelis are a high-functioning
population and they are using their collective intellect to win this 96+
year long war against their existence. What they do is neither good or
    evil, it is merely SMART.
This is why Chomsky had such a hard time with the last answer. Because its
illogical. When asked why Israel does all these (inferred) dastardly
things, the only LOGICAL answer would be for conquest of territory not
belonging to them. However, Israel has only advanced its position a few
linear miles since 1967 and has simultaneously given up oil fields in the
Sinai and 3,400 year old Jewish neighborhoods in Gaza. So, therefore,
Israel has NO reason for these actions (and motives) they are accused of
except perhaps that they are inherently sadistic. Or, as I would suggest,
that they are doing the smart things to protect their territory and its
citizens from a perpetual war against the Jews.

  12. Well Mr Chomsky why do you suppose the US continues to support what is
increasingly a pariah state headed towards apartheid when it finally
stopped supporting the SA regime?…….Because of the lobby that’s why.
It’s like the whole world acknowledges the presence and influence of the
lobby now except for Noam Chomsky.

  13. When it comes to Israel, Chomsky has no credibility. His views are as
predictable as they are negative. Sometimes, people have a blind spot, and
with regard to Chomsky, Israel is that blind spot. An objective observer
would question Hamas’ charter, Hamas’ military buildup, and the Hamas
tunnels that actually go beneath Israeli land. But, Chomsky is not an
objective observer; he is an Israel hater.
